Last week’s aim was to raise awareness of Human Rights. Firstly, we did this by delivering an assembly to each year group in the mornings. This was primarily to inform the school of Human Rights Day on Wed 10th December. We took the assemblies ourselves. They consisted of the history of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, starting with its birth following the atrocities of the second world war and moving on to highlighting various articles of the declaration and projects we are involved in.
During the Assemblies we drew attention to the UNICEF initiative, ‘Imagine’. This is a world wide sing along involving David Guetta and Yoko Ono. Many famous people have been involved and it’s a simple process. All you need to do is download the touch cast app, film yourself singing and share it!
Another project we have been involved in this week is ‘Write for Rights’ which is an Amnesty International project allowing us to send cards of solidarity or even just Christmas cards to a person who has had their human rights violated. As well as this we wrote to officials urging them to release people from prison, to commute their sentences or to investigate alleged abuses.
The focus of our week was on Wednesday when members of the RRSA/Amnesty International group gave up one of their rights for the day. This ranged from giving up the right to processions (e.g.. phones), giving up the right to leisure time, giving up your right to freedom of expression (doing a sponsored silence), giving up your right to freedom (by being a class slave) or wearing a plain white mask to symbolize the disappeared people or those without identity. Everyone who took part found that although it was a busy and difficult week it was very worthwhile. So, well done to all those who gave something up and thanks to all those who sponsored us. So far we have raised an astonishing £417 for Amnesty International and there is still money coming in. There is still time to sponsor us if you would like to, the address is https://www.justgiving.com/knoxhr/ Thank you!
