Eco-Curriculars at Knox Academy

At Knox Academy, we value the environment in our local community and in the wider world. We feel that it is important for young people to engage with environmental issues, which have an impact on our present and undoubtedly on our future. For this reason, there are two environmental clubs at Knox Academy in which students can get involved: the Eco-Committee and the Green Team.

The Eco-Committee is a student and staff group which works to implement positive environmental changes within Knox Academy and the school community. The committee meets once a week on Tuesdays at lunch time in Miss Laudi's room (T1.2) to organise environmental initiatives like awareness campaigns, donation drives, and our ever popular Eco-Week.

The Green Team is Knox Academy's recycling club and we meet every Wednesday at lunch time in Miss Laudi's room (T1.2). We get together once a week to empty recycling from classrooms around the school and we work on other projects throughout the year too. We have an amazing group of students in S1-S4 who are already involved and we always welcome new members!

Welcome back from the October break! Our Eco-Tip this week involves being more selective with the products you buy. When it comes to buying fruits and vegetables, you can make an effort to buy them loose, rather than packaged in plastic. Unfortunately, most major grocery stores choose to package their fruits and vegetables in plastic wrapping because it is seen as "convenient". However, this is a large source of unnecessary plastic waste! Why are bananas sold in plastic bags? It's outrageous! You can be a more environmental consumer by avoiding this plastic packaging and instead choosing to buy loose products. Also, many local farm shops and markets sell fruits and vegetables completely loose, so keep an eye out for these too!

Our Eco-Tip this week is a simple one and many of you already do it: make an effort to take reusable shopping bags when you go to any store! By doing this, you can significantly reduce the amount of plastic bags going to landfill because they aren't recyclable! Don't be shy to take reusable shopping bags to ALL stores, even clothing stores! Are you ever going to use that TopShop plastic bag again? Probably not. So help the environment and skip the bags!
