Next year's residential summer school will be held at the University of Strathclyde from 15-20 June 2014, and pupils can now apply online via the Space School website.
The Scottish Space School seeks to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and it is aimed at S5 pupils currently studying maths and science subjects at Higher level.

On the 29th of August we travelled to Edinburgh to attend a talk by Google Vice President Dr. Vint Cerf, one of the people responsible for creating the internet. He answered questions on a wide range of subjects, submitted by pupils from the many different schools and colleges in attendance.
Some of the topics he discussed were his work on interplanetary networking (computer networking between different planets), his thoughts on how technology will evolve over the coming years, the possibilities of wearable computers such as Google glass, his work on creating the internet and his thoughts on how the internet has grown since its inception. Our favourite part by far was hearing about his work with NASA, and how computers are used on such a grand scale.

read more...Our S1 pupils took part in 'Spy Week' during the second last week of term. The activities ranged from solving crimes, sending secret messages, keeping fit and packing a spy suitcase, amongst others.

Wow, what a day!
Today our youngsters had what may well be a once in a lifetime opportunity. We welcomed a genuine Enigma Machine.....
At this point I'd like to thank the London Mathematical Society and our very own Knox Academy Support Group (KASG) for funding the Project but let me assure you that it was well worth it!
So, what did we learn and what did we do?
Today I had the lovely opportunity to go and visit some classes and I must take this opportunity (I'm sure that I'll say it again though) to say a huge thanks to staff for really 'going for it' and to the pupils who are finishing the school year as they started it - enthusiastic, whole-hearted and committed. All qualities that bode well for the future.
I'll try to give a summary of the lessons I visited today:
Period 1: Mr Doig's "Spy School" were looking at Morse code as an example of sending a coded message. They built a simple telegraph machine and tried sending messages through wires. They then moved onto sending the coded messages from classroom to classroom...
